Roll to Speak: an ESL dice speaking game

How to play Roll to Speak

1. Choose a story theme and read the first sentence frame together.
2. Ask a student to pick a number, then roll the dice in the game.
3. Use the selected word to say the complete sentence aloud. Model the sentence if the learner needs help.
4. Continue through the story, taking turns. At the end, retell the story without reading every sentence.

Choose a familiar topic for your first round. Try Silly mode when your group is ready for unexpected combinations.

Example: build a pet story

“My pet’s name is Anna. It is a dinosaur. It likes pizza.”

This is a sample teacher model. Your dice choices will produce a different story. Ask a follow-up question such as “Where does your dinosaur sleep?” to move beyond reading the sentence frame.

Three classroom variations

• Quick warm-up: play a few rows, with a different student speaking each time.
• Pair retelling: one learner retells the story while their partner listens and helps with missing details.
• Speak, then write: after the oral round, students write their version and add one original sentence.

Use the student roster to organise turns and the timer if your group benefits from a time limit. Beginners can practise one sentence at a time; stronger learners can add reasons, descriptions and questions.
